Halloween Candy Buyback - Sharing Your Mounds of Joy

After last year's success, we are aiming to gather even more candy this year in our second annual Halloween Candy Buy Back event. Again, we are offering your little pirates and princesses the chance to trade in their candy loot. Last year's event culminated in the collection of 250 pounds of candy, which were then sent to our troops overseas.

Halloween is a day broadly celebrated each year by children as well as adults, and sweets play a large role in the fun. However, over-consumption of candy can dramatically affect children's teeth and lead to overall health concerns. Dr. Andrew Kelson reiterates, "Halloween is a great tradition for costumes and sweets. However, I feel we can offer children a valuable alternative to consuming the vast amounts of candy. The candy buy back is win-win-win situation for parents, for kids, and for the soldiers that the candy is sent to."

This year, Dental Horizons is teaming up with local schools to increase awareness of the affects sweets can have on your teeth. For the school that has the most participants on the day of the event, Dental Horizons will match the total dollar amount earned by all students and donate it to that school.

Trick-or-treaters are encouraged to gather all their excess candy and bring it to Dental Horizons on Tuesday, November 1st, between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm. In return they will receive $1 per pound of candy (up to 5 pounds) as well as other door prizes. Additionally, participants will be placed in a drawing for an iPod shuffle and a Sonicare toothbrush.

The collected candy will be donated to "Operation Gratitude", a non-profit organization that ships the candy overseas to our military troops. (http://www.operationgratitude. com) U.S. soldiers can enjoy a little taste of home and win the hearts of the local community by sharing the "bounty" we have to offer. More importantly, the letters and cards that are shipped with the candy from each young donor can raise the spirits of our service men and women away from home.
