What Are Bridges? Bridges are used to fill a gap between teeth with a natural looking tooth. They are commonly made of two crowns which serve as anchors on either end of the bridge. These teeth are fused together and eventually permanently cemented onto the teeth surrounding the gap. What Do Bridges Do? Dental bridges maintain the structure and alignment of your teeth and jaw when you lose a tooth. If the gap from the missing tooth is not filled in, your other teeth will eventually grow into that space. This will result in crooked teeth, a misaligned bite, possible gum disease and temporomandular joint disorder (TMJ). Who Needs Bridges? Dental bridges are recommended for patients with at least one missing tooth. Bridges are most commonly used for patients with multiple missing teeth. Patients with any kind of tooth loss, whether it be from trauma or tooth or gum decay can be candidates for dental bridges. Bridges may not be the best option for some patients. Schedule an appointment with one of our dentists to discuss whether a bridge or dental implant is the best option for you. In-Office Same Day Bridges Taking a mold of your teeth is the first step in creating your bridge. The two teeth on either side of the gap will be sanded down to reduce their size for the crowns to fit over them. Traditionally and in many dental offices, your crowns will be made off-site at a dental lab. A temporary bridge with the two anchor crowns will be placed onto the teeth and will be worn while you wait for your permanent crown to be finished. Another appointment will be made so the temporary bridge to be replaced with the permanent one.
